"This work opens the way for a potential new approach to treating baldness," said Cheng-Ming Chuong, quoted by AFP. "It is possible that these same processes exist in other organs regeneration."
Specifically, scientists have succeeded in cloning hair follicles, the small cavities that contain hair.
They used human cells of the papillary dermis from seven donors were cultured in the laboratory and then re-implanted on the backs of rodents.
In five out of seven tests, grafting produced new hair for at least six weeks. And a DNA analysis has shown that new hair follicles were human donors and genetically similar.
Research must of course continue. Next step: "search the molecular signals that control the production of follicles and thus hair growth," said Dr. Colin Jahoda, one of the coauthors of the study published in the minutes Account of the American Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
This technique has not yet been tested in humans, but it has already attracted a lot of hope to counter baldness. Because current treatments are not able to create the conditions necessary for the manufacture of new hair.
